Crowns & Bridges
Teeth that have been severely damaged due to decay, fracture, grinding or trauma can often be restored with crowns.
A crown is a strong restoration that completely covers a tooth. Crowns can be made of metal, such as gold. However they are usually made with a porcelain surface so that they look like natural teeth.
More recently, crowns have been fabricated with metal-free materials so that they look even more natural. Newer nonmetal materials such as Zirconia are nearly as strong as metal crowns. In fact, Zirconia crowns are so strong that they are often preferred for people who have the habit of grinding their teeth (bruxism).
Crowns can be used as part of a fixed bridge that replaces one or more missing teeth. A false tooth is attached to crowns that are bonded to natural teeth on each side of the space where the tooth is missing. The space is filled with a natural looking and functioning artificial tooth that is fixed in place.
